BaaS solutions for games
Recently I have been searching for BaaS (Backend-as-a-Service) solution for GeoWhere. I want to add a turn-based multiplayer mode to GeoWhere and, although I could just develop everything myself, I am interested finding services out there that will allow me reach higher ROI and release these changes quicker to my players.
My criteria is that the service must have an easy to integrate SDK, great community and tutorials, async matching, free or accessible price for this one-man-shop (me) and good dashboards.
So far, what I found was:
Seems to be the most professional solution out there. It is flexible and has a good set of features such as analytics, a management dashboard, leaderboards, and real-time and turn-based multiplayer. It’s too expensive for me though, so out.
Now this one looks interesting. It has a lot of features, a Slack channel, forums, countless YouTube videos and a free tier that would allow me to launch GeoWhere without having to spending any money. Features include player accounts, virtual goods management, in-game messaging, and game data storage. I am currently studying it but still struggling on getting the matching happening. This area seems to be a bit lacking, and if that’s the case, unfortunately I will have to drop it.
I quickly tried this one last night and was impressed how easy was to use their SDK. It calls itself “backend in a box.” It is a ready-made, cloud-based backend designed for game developers, allowing them to jumpstart their game creation with various pre-built features. Its features include Cloud Data, including user and global statistics, shared data and custom files, Multiplayer, with support for turn-by-turn and one-way offline (clash-style) multiplayer. It has a free tier for development only, and when you launch the game, 30 USD per month. Quite steep unfortunately for this small time developer here but from those three, it is winning at the moment.
